Colorado Family & Medical Leave Insurance Went Into Effect Jan 1, 2024
Approved by voters in 2020, the Colorado Family & Medical Leave Insurance (FAMLI) program went into effect Jan. 1, 2024. Both employers and employees contribute premiums to the program, which provides up to 12 weeks of paid leave for most employees to take care of themselves or their families during life circumstances that pull them away from their jobs.
This can include such circumstances as growing a family or taking care of a loved one with a serious health condition. There are also provisions for additional time off for those who experience complications during pregnancy or childbirth.
What you should know:
- Employees: The state has created an online portal where workers can create an account, submit an application for benefits, and track application status. Applications are reviewed and certified by healthcare providers.
- Employers: You need to update your employee headcounts by January 31, 2024 to make sure you aren’t charged incorrect premiums. Premiums are paid quarterly to the FAMLI fund.
- Government Employees: 80% of local government entities have opted out of the FAMLI program — about 1,250 so far — according to the Colorado Sun. Some have adopted their own plan.
